Pearl Fishers

The Pearl Fishers – 2004 production

A bold choice

Artistic Director, Janet Bennett; Musical Director, Paul Jeanes

Carmen is accredited by some as Bizet's greatest opera work, while his other operas, of which there were only a few before his very early death, are less often performed. With the amazing vision of Janet Bennett and the acquisition of a bright new musical director in Paul Jeanes, formerly of the BBC and ENO, this bold choice of a production was brought to the stage in brilliant and dramatic fashion. Glittering performances set against a beautifully designed backdrop promised that the now established company was hungry to push on to bigger and better things.

From the reviews…

…magnificent choral singing showing a mastery of the dynamics which must have taken much hard rehearsal.

As Zurga, John Milford was superb.

Alexander Anderson-Hall's delightfully musical tenor and acting ability made Nadir a most believable and affecting young lover.

There was silence as they enchanted the audience with the famous duet.

…inspired use of children, weaving in and out of the attractively dressed chorus brought welcome movement — the audience loved their dancing.
